Scientists have found caves in the comet

Inside the comet Churyumov — Gerasimenko there are no large voids. The mission of “Rosetta” the European space Agency made measurements that clearly demonstrated and solved the old mystery. Spacecraft have visited a total of eight comets, and through these missions we pulled a picture of the basic properties of these space-time capsules. On some questions the answers were found, others appeared.

The primary matter of the Solar system was extremely loose and porous. This conclusion was made by scientists as a result of studies of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

On present estimates of astronomers, the mass of the comet is about ten billion tons, which is twenty million times the mass of the largest man-made space object – ISS. Despite its impressiveness, the indicator for an object like comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, is considered to be small. The reason lies in the extraordinary porosity of the comet – about 70-80% of its volume are voids. Its density can be compared with the density of cork, wood, or aerogel.

In this regard, scientists have a question about the distribution of these voids: uniform or concentrated, in large caves or the network of large voids.

The answer to this question was found during a comprehensive study of the gravitational field of the comet. Scientists have come up with ingenious methods of observations,in which were used the probe “Rosetta”, exploring the comet from August 2014, and the number of radiotelex on Earth.

Martin Petzold from the University of Cologne (Germany) and his colleagues have noticed that the gravitational field of the comet’s influence, as “Rosetta” communicated with the Earth, affecting the frequency of the radio signal. This and decided to use scientists.

It turned out that when the probe approached the comet, its fluctuations of the gravitational field arising from the heterogeneity of depths, in a special way affect the wavelength of the RF signal: when driving over particularly dense areas of the comet and the waves become shorter, and when passing over voids wavelengths increased.

These oscillations of frequencies of the radio signal and allowed scientists to make fairly accurate gravitational map of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko. We have found large voids and re-measured the mass of the comet, its average density. It turned out that the results of repeated studies were almost the same as the previous one.

Meanwhile, gravity map of the comet showed that there are no large caves (several hundred meters) that matter 67P is extremely loose and 72-74% from the pores and other microscopic voids between the grains of dust and ice.

Most of the subsurface of the comet is dust – it is about four times larger than ice crystals that have survived since the birth of the Solar system.

This discovery now allows us to say that primary matter of the Solar system had similar properties.

Earlier MK . with reference to information published on the ESA website reported that scientists from the mission “Rosetta” announced the presence of water ice on the surface of a celestial body. Reportedly, the spectrometer installed on Board the “Rosetta”, is intended to study the comet’s nucleus and its environment.

Last year, he found on the comet organic matter 16. Among the findings were carbon, nitrogen, and brand new for comets: acetamide, methylisocyanate, propionic aldehyde and acetone just. The presence of all these substances on the comets may indicate that they all could exist at the time of the birth of the Solar system and theoretically it is comets could be carriers of these substances on the planet, including the Earth.
